I haven’t been to the outdoors this weekend so this weeks blog post has a more reflective nature looking at a few bargain bits of kit I’ve accumulated and used extensively over the years.
We all like a bargain – here are five of my faves:
- Camping carabiner mug £3

Available all over the place, commonly found online or even in your local megamarket. Mine has been with me all over the world and for me it is quite the feat that it has made it back to England each time – I wholeheartedly believe this is due to the satisfying way it can be clipped onto anything! Now a faithful stalwart on any outdoors trip it handily also fits neatly inside my cooking pans and an MSR ‘Pocket Rocket’ stove fits inside the mug.
- Tarpaulin £1
Found in pound shops nationwide. Super light, super strong and keeps the bottom of your tent dry and thorn free. Also adds an extra layer of insulation and can double up as a ‘rug’ or emergency shelter. WINNER.

- Ear plugs £3.32 for 20 pairs – Amazon
When travelling or camping I’m a big fan of an ear plug BUT only if they are comfy. These are the best I’ve ever tried, they perfectly mute annoying noises – snoring, TV, general travel din – particularly useful on overnight train or bus rides. I wouldn’t travel without them.
- End off an old roll mat – FREE – if you’ve got an old roll mat
Mini rug/bum protector. Life is always better with a dry bum, with this handy piece of incredibly light and sturdy foam your derriere can be dry on even the dampest of grounds.
- A bit of old rope – FREE – an old guyline or bit of 5mm rope lying about

So many uses! I scoffed when my Dad suggested it become an integral part of my outdoor kit. He was absolutely right I’ve used it all over the show. Need a washing line – DONE. Need a new guyline – DONE. Need to build an emergency shelter with your £1 tarpaulin – DONE. Get some in your kit right now!
Send me your tips too! I love them.
